The Maeve Binchy Writer’s Club

Bestselling author Maeve Binchy offers a new book on March 9, stepping away from her fiction to offer advice to aspiring writers, along with some bonus material. The Maeve Binchy Writer’s Club (Anchor, 2010) is packed full of sage advice from Binchy, other successful writers, and a few publishing representatives, to anyone with a desire to write and gain closer insight behind a successful writer like Binchy.

The Maeve Binchy Writer’s Club is an actual club that met for a series of lectures by Binchy in 2008. The series was offered at The National College of Ireland in Dublin for twenty weeks. Each week Binchy addressed a specific topic of writing and publishing, from getting started and manuscript submission, to writing for specific genres such as suspense, children, and comedy.

Binchy was aided by several other writers who contributed to her lectures with anecdotes of their own related to Binchy’s weekly topic. The Anchor edition of the book is the American edition and includes two American editors who shed light on the publishing world from this side of the pond.

The book is structured as a writer’s journal with blank pages for notes and an appendix full of additional resources including: suggested further reading, related websites, and a list of literature awards that look for manuscripts from new writers.

Fans of Binchy’s work will be delighted with the additional material in the second half of the book. All of it was previously published in the Irish Times and includes a selection of twelve articles from her weekly column with the paper, as well as a collection of seven short stories. Binchy’s warm and charming writing typical of her style is present in all of her stories and some were chosen as examples to an audience of the book looking for an idea of what they should be doing to reach their book-writing goals.

So, whether you’re looking to write a book, been at it for a while, know someone trying, or are simply interested in the book publishing world, Binchy and company provide an insightful and inspiring account of their experiences. Their friendly and easy manner make them feel like a comfortable acquaintance and not an out of reach powerhouse in the book world.
