Jake’s Rocks
The Allegheny National Forest which straddles the New York / Pennsylvania border offers many natural attractions which continually draw visitors from all over the country, but one of Allegheny’s attractions in particular offers a singularly unique experience.
The attraction is called Jake’s Rocks and it is an incredible combination of rock formations, caves and towering cliffs which offer unprecedented views of the hills of Allegheny and the Allegheny reservoir.
Jake’s Rocks is best described and understood as being part of the Rock cities which are so prevalent in south west portion of New York State. When wondering through the rock formations it’s easy to understand why this place is considered so special. It really seems as if the massive boulders and city like rock formations had been created and put in place by giants rather than by some natural process.
Unlike many of the area’s other Rock cities, Jake’s Rocks also contains several small caves which also make for great exploring. Take the Indian Cave Trail to the very popular Indian Cave right in the middle of the Jake’s Rocks formation.
But perhaps the most arresting feature of Jake’s Rocks is the extensive cliffs which are at points, as high as 600 feet above the water. You’ll marvel at the beautiful upriver view from North Rock. Then hike south and take in the view of the Kinzua Dam from South Rock and eventually Picnic Rock which also offers a wooded picnic area complete with tables and grills.
When you get to the park, just make sure to pick up a map from the ranger station. It will detail not only how to get to Jake’s Rocks but also all the other great attractions the Allegheny National Forest has to offer.
If you’re looking for something to do this summer, you really have to consider making the short trip to the Allegheny National Forest and Jake’s Rocks. It is an experience you’ll never forget and a place you’ll want to return to again and again.
