Flippy Goes on a Road Trippy

Start off 2009 with a fun new book for your young child available January 1. Flippy Goes on a Road Trippy by John Mese and Dawn Kelsey, and illustrated by Chanler Holden, is a treat for young book lovers with its imaginative characters and relatable story.

The main characters of the book are Flippy the Tadpole and his water-loving friends who live on the southern coast around Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They embark on a road trip first heading West towards California and then a stop in Hawaii before turning East to Seattle and across to New York City. Along the way they meet new friends, see some well-known sights, eat local food, and collect souvenirs, which are displayed at the end.

Being animals, Flippy and his friends meet other animals, many who are well-known to live in the places they visit, like Betty Buffalo in the mid-West, a couple of pack mules in the Grand Canyon, and ocean abounding Ocho the octopus.

Flippy, being the ringleader of the group, takes along some funny-sounding nicknames as he goes that will emit some giggles from little listeners. Las Flippy Cards are played in Las Vegas, Chappy Flippy rides horses on a ranch then there is Flippy’s specialty, tasty Marshmallow Flippys, cooked around the campfire.

Young children will enjoy the sing-song rhyming narration of the story and looking at the bubbles that appear on each page. Flippy and his friends are water creatures so you can easily imagine the air bubbles they blow on land but they also packed a bottle to use on their trip along with snacks, drinks, socks and toothbrushes. These are some of the most common items children can relate to packing when going on a trip whether it’s long or short and that bottle of bubbles may be a new idea to include for rest stops during your own trip.

The pictures are a simple two-dimensional style with bright colors utilizing the full array of the rainbow to populate each page. Details abound throughout from the monogrammed luggage for each traveler to the snow globes of various tourist stops. Children will enjoy spotting and naming many things on each page that are easily recognizable, making the book personable to them with the easy recognition. Don’t miss their color-changing car that looks like a Volkswagen Beetle, a symbol of fun on the roads.

The opening page that introduces the main characters will need to be looked at closely by adults if you’re unfamiliar with Flippy books. Tiny tags label each character by name are too small for younger eyes to see.

Be prepared: Flippy’s trip just may get you planning your own open road show and making memories with your child as you sightsee. Children will love reading about the photo book Flippy and his friends create of their trip then making their own to relate to.

If you haven’t heard of Flippy yet, this is the fifth book released featuring the young tadpole, a grinning blue-colored wiggly character that will bring smiles to you and your child.
