 When Kevin Grupp and his partner Bob Moll realized that their business MVP Trucking was really starting to suffer due to increased fuel costs, they didn’t wait until the bottom fell out, they did something. What they did wasn’t what you might guess, but it is exactly the type of business move that everyone should be considering. They diversified.
Its how they diversified that is so fascinating. Rather than trying to find other opportunities in the trucking business, Kevin and his partner Bob really thought outside of the box, and went back to their roots.
As it turns out, both Kevin and Bob worked in the restaurant/bar business when they were young men. So when they decided to diversify and start another business, they went back to the industry that they had worked in as young men and they began researching restaurant and bar opportunities.
They started out by thinking about what they love. And as Kevin admitted to me, both he and Bob had a period in their lives in which they were among that regular late night crowd that can be found in any Might Taco on any given weekend night.
Fast forward to today and they both still had an interest in Mexican food, only there isn’t a Mexican restaurant that caters to those who have long since left their late night Mighty Taco trips in the past.
So that was where they began their research. After looking at several different Mexican food franchise opportunities they came to one they believed would be a winner. The franchise they brought to the area is Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina. And it is a decision that is really paying off.
As it turns out, Kevin and Bob weren’t the only ones looking for a good Mexican restaurant in Western New York, a lot of people are and they are showing up at Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina in droves.
With locations in both Buffalo and Cheektowaga, NY and a third location soon to open in Clarence, NY it seems that Kevin and Bob really hit on something. And they did it by thinking outside the box, and trusting themselves.
Things have sure changed since Kevin and Bob opened their first Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina. Now Kevin and Bob split their responsibilities with Kevin managing the restaurants full time while Bob focuses on the trucking business.
Now the two partners are positioned to succeed. As fuel prices settle, the trucking business does well and with ever expanding plans for Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina restaurants, it looks like they’ll do well on that front as well.
Kevin and Bob have succeeded because they thought smart and acted boldly. It’s not only a local success story, it’s a business success story that anyone thinking of opening a business can learn from.
