Rock n' Roll Tour of Memphis

Beale StreetAre you an Elvis fanatic? Can't get enough of Bob Dylan? Head to Memphis, Tennessee for a rock n' roll tour that will leave you swinging your hips, "All Shook Up" full of rock n' roll.

Graceland is the second birthplace of Elvis and countless other greats. Beale Street has historic markers and museums for several legends including the W. C. Handy House Museum, 352 Beale St. (901-527-3427) and Smithsonian's Rock 'n' Soul Museum, 191 Beale St. (901-205-2533), featuring Elvis' satin suit and artifacts, recordings, and photos, from several other musicians. Then for your night rock n' roll tour check out the nightclubs on Beale Street. You may not see Elvis, but Graceland is still home to countless talented musicians.

Sun Records Studio, 706 Union Ave. (901-521-0664), was opened by Sam Phillips in 1950, who produced Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, 926 E. McLemore Ave. (901-942-SOUL), features exhibits such as a re-created gospel church and TV show Soul Train's dance floor.

You can even tour Graceland itself, Elvis' then $ 100 thousand mansion just down Elvis Presley Boulevard. Sitting on 14 acres, it's colonial-style and decked out to the nines with white carpeting and gold and satin accents. You can view all of Elvis' platinum records adorning the walls and several of his suits outfitted on mannequins. If you're a true Elvis fan, the highlight of the tour may be the memorial garden where Elvis and his parents are buried.

After touring Elvis' home, you may have had your fair share of the king, and if your family is rock n' rolled out, you can visit the Memphis Zoo, 2000 Prentiss Place, Memphis (901-276-WILD). The zoo fits in with the grand Memphis style, home to 3,500 animals including giant pandas, polar bears, and sea lions. The National Civil Rights Museum is at the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968. It exhibits an overview of the civil rights movement. There are plenty of other attractions including amusement parks, theaters, and festivals to keep you entertained and to learn about this rich city.

Whether you want to share your love of Elvis with your family or discover his roots to complete your life's destiny, Memphis, Tennessee is your home for rock n' roll.
