Man of Honor and the Best Woman are Becoming More Common By: Carol Dunn  |

 A few years ago the idea would have seemed strange and completely novel, but today the idea of having a woman as the best man or a man as the maid of honor isn’t a novelty, it’s a reality that is becoming more and more common everyday.
No I’m not talking about same sex marriages; I’m talking about traditional marriages in which the bride or groom’s best friend just happens to be a member of the opposite sex. Rather than have the best friend sit aside at the wedding, a lot of couples are choosing to get them in the wedding party by changing the traditional rolls of the best man and maid of honor as to include their opposite sex friend.
A first it may seem that this kind of variation on the traditional wedding may cause confusion and complexity, but in reality it seems that the only thing that really changes in the wedding itself is the titles of those who accompany the couple.
Some of the new titles being used include: the Best Woman, Manmaid, Bridesman, Groomsmaid, and Dude of Honor.
When it comes down to it, only the title changes with the change in gender, the responsibilities of each member of the wedding party still stays the same. Just like the best man the best woman is still responsible to make sure the groom gets to the church on time, and the best woman is often given the responsibility of holding the ring until it is needed during the ceremony.
The groomsman acts just as a bridesmaid would. No he doesn’t carry a bouquet of flowers down the aisle, but he does help the bride with anything she needs before, during and after the ceremony.
What the responsibilities are with the stag party and the bridal shower I’m not really sure, but I’m guessing that they are the same for the opposite gender best man and maid of honor as they are for the traditional best man and maid of honor. But this might be the one area where the women should do their thing and the men should do theirs.
